Supporting a longer, happier life
Desexing plays a crucial role in promoting your pet’s overall well-being, reducing health risks, and ensuring a happier, healthier life.
The team at PetMed Kohimarama shares a deep passion for animals and have built a welcoming and supportive environment where pets and their owners feel at home. Every pet is treated with the same care and compassion as if they were their own, creating a space where your pet is not just another patient but a part of the PetMed Kohimarama family.
Neuters
Neutering your pet can have health and behavioural benefits. As well as being an important part of responsible pet ownership.
Cat neutering is typically performed when the cat is between 5 to 6 months old or older. This procedure is vital for promoting a healthy, long life for male cats. Neutering helps prevent behavioral issues like spraying and reduces the likelihood of roaming, cat fights, and contracting diseases such as feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which is spread through blood and saliva during fights.
For male dogs, neutering has significant health and behavioural benefits. Neutered dogs are less likely to mark their territory or show aggression toward other dogs. It also eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and greatly reduces the chance of developing prostatic cancer later in life.
Spays
With a focus on compassionate, expert care, our team ensures your pet’s spey experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible, so they can return to a happy, healthy life.
Speying, which is routinely done for female cats between 4 to 6 months of age and for dogs between 6 to 18 months depending on their breed, offers important health and behavioural advantages. Speying prevents unwanted pregnancies, minimises hormonal behavioral changes during heat, and helps prevent pyometra, a potentially life-threatening uterine infection in older unspeyed females. It also lowers the risk of developing mammary and ovarian cancers later in life.
Although spaying is a routine surgery, it is complex, involving the removal of the uterus and ovaries through the abdominal cavity. This procedure is ideally performed when your pet is not in heat.
Your pet will receive comprehensive care, including thorough pre-surgical examinations, pain management, and tailored fluid therapy to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery. For female dogs, the veterinarian will examine the external genitalia before surgery to check for issues like involuted vulvas, which can predispose dogs to infections. If this is observed, the vet may recommend allowing your dog to go through a heat cycle to ensure proper development.
